The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, commonly known as the Florence Cathedral or the Duomo, is an iconic symbol of Florence. Constructed over several centuries, its construction began in 1296 and was completed in 1436 with the crowning achievement of Filippo Brunelleschi’s magnificent dome, which was the largest of its kind at the time.
